Just about everyone has heard the expression, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” Scientists call it “holism”. Philosophers call it “gestalt”. Businesspeople call it “synergy. The basic idea is at least as old as Aristotle. Although overused and often misused, the expression perfectly captures the sentiment behind Cherry Suede’s Til I Found You. The song’s popularity is tied to the realization that just about anything is better when you can share it with someone else.

The songwriting process itself is a great example of this idea as well. It involves taking many different musical parts and mixing them together to create a single song track that has more effect than any of the parts when played individually. In the case of Til I Found You, the process resulted in a delightfully upbeat and catchy tune about the power of partnership.

Despite the song’s outward simplicity, it features very demanding vocal and instrumental parts. “This is one song where I can’t hold back at all. If I do, it sounds just awful,” comments singer Randy Scott about the cord-straining vocals. According to lead guitarist Randy Young, “For me, the challenge of this song is in the intricacy of guitar work, in moving up and down the full length of the fingerboard.”
